My introduction to wild Africa was in Zambia, specifically in a lodge some ways from downtown Livingstone, situated along the Zambezi river. I was there to visit the Victoria Falls, which, at this time of year, had been reduced to a slim trickle on the Zambian side but allowed for the unique Devil’s Pool experience.
The highlight for me, however, was a sunset cruise along the Zambezi, enjoyed shortly after I had checked in. We spotted plenty of sunbathing crocodiles and, as dusk started to fall, a breeding herd of elephants indulged in a drink from the river. My favourite shot from the experience has to be the following, taken as the resident dominant hippo bared its teeth in warning as our little motorised boat drew too close. Not bad for a first outing in the African wilderness!
